SIAF: Mexico Meets Japan on the Canvas - Ricardo Ruiz Velasco

The Bold Colors of Mexico converse with Japanese Culture on the Canvas, featuring Japanese-based Mexican artist Ricardo Ruiz Velasco.

Velasco will present an artistic fusion of two cultures created by blending Japanese cultural influences with colors and materials inspired by his Mexican roots. His presentation will explore his artistic journey and the evolution of his personal style as artist.

The pieces explored in this presentation will include traditional Mexican style paintings, sculptures, and a variety of anime inspired works. His work has been selected annually for the “Foreign Artists Exhibition” in the Nagoya International Center since 2006. Additionally, he has had his work featured at an Art Gallery and well-known theme park in Japan.

Biography

Ricardo Ruiz Velasco is a Mexican born artist based in Japan, where he has resided in the city of Nagakute for the last 15 years.

He has held positions in a variety of sectors including working as a draftsman of architectural blueprints, graphic designer, muralist, and set designer. At the young age of 20, he founded a printing company, Diseño Creativo, where he utilized his knowledge in graphic design and advertisement for two decades. His company worked alongside international organizations like McDonald’s, Formula 1, and the World Trade Center. In 2005, he accepted a position working with the World Expo in Nagakute, Japan. After meeting his wife in the nearby city of Nagoya, he chose to remain in Japan permanently.

His work has been selected annually for the “Foreign Artists Exhibition” at the Nagoya International Center since 2006. Additionally, he has had his work featured at the Chiyoda Art Gallery and the Kikoro and Moriso theme park in Japan.

He is known for his Mexican style paintings on amate paper, although he has produced works in a variety medium, including small sculptures and anime inspired cartoons.
