NWW: Thermal & Moisture Protection Symposium: Basic Thermal & Moisture Protection Materials & Methods

This symposium will feature five courses:

Course 1: Meeting Fire Codes with OSB, which looks at Fire-Retardant Cementitious Coated (FRCC) Oriented Strand Board (OSB); its constitution, history and the most common applications in wall and roof systems. The course also covers key building code and fire code requirements relevant to FRCC OSB.

Course 2: Durable Wall Assemblies – Design Considerations and Material Selection: an overview of today’s wall assemblies including advance steel framing systems, rainscreen cladding options (terracotta, stone, porcelain, glass, fibrecement, HPL) and design considerations such as air and water management, continuous insulation, fixing systems, thermal performance and durability.

Course 3: Metal Panels 101 will give a general overview of the key aspects of the application, substrate selection, coating options, and fundamental benefits of metal roof and wall panels. This course is meant to give a baseline understanding of metal panels to those with limited experience and enhance and strengthen the knowledge base of those with experience with metal panels.

Course 4: Horizontal Sliding Fire Doors In a Means of Egress: An Analysis of Recent Changes to the Model Codes. Discussion topics include: fire rated opening protectives; egress requirements for IBC and NFPA; applications; operation and components; access control and remote monitoring, and design criteria.

Course 5: Air Barrier 1  / Choices of Air Barriers for Commercial Building Enclosures will give an understanding of the impact of air leakage on building enclosure performance; key properties and uses of fluid applied air barriers; main attributes of self-adhered and mechanically-fastened air barriers.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Demonstrate how FRCC OSB meets code requirements; discuss testing standards and applications.
  • Understand thermally-broken cladding support systems; designing and specifying new steel framing systems for enhanced acoustical and thermal properties; cost and performance of rainscreen cladding systems
  • Understand different panel materials and benefits; fundamentals of coil coating; commonly specificied metal roof systems and applications; metal wall systems including the advantages and disadvantages.
  • Learn about Horizontal Sliding Fire Doors and why they are a great solution for egress and building design, while also touching on some code analysis.
  • Learn about the impact of air leakage on building enclosure performance; plus basic features of air barrier systems: self-adhered, fluid-applied, mechanically fastened, spray polyurethane foams.
