CODEFEST! Fire Sprinkler Options

Find out more about the rest of CODEFEST!

Presenter: Gene Endthoff

This multi-media 4-hour seminar demonstrates how to use the options in the building code to your advantage.  It includes case studies, interactive discussions as well as an actual design study for a 4-story building using the International Building Code and the NFPA 101 Life Safety code.

November 12: 2006 IBC Chapter 7 – Fire Resistance Rated Construction
Tom Kinsman will lead this overview to helpyou understand the basic standards that support the fire resistive requirements of Chapter 7 and the relationship between the chapter’s fire resistive components (exterior walls, fire walls, fire partitions etc.) and the rest of the code.

November 19: Two Seminars w/ Samir Mokashi
Seminar 1: Code Alternates and Interpretations
This class will cover detailed steps on how to write a good alternate design proposal and provide examples of successful projects. Class will include examples how code interpretations made by jurisdictions are influenced by the regulatory language, historical precedents, scope of its application, and framing of the question. This class will include a workshop in which students are encouraged to participate and ask questions regarding specific problems or projects they are working on.

November 19: Two Seminars w/ Samir Mokashi
Seminar 2: Building Area and Means of Egress
The first part of the second class will clarify the application of separated and non-separated uses as well as accessory uses; identifying pros and cons for the designer and the owner. This is still very confusing for many designers and even code administrators. The second part will deal with means of egress, clarify the three components of egress, and provide an explanation of a multilayered approach to regulations that allow occupants to escape or avoid a potential fire. Real life project examples will be used to illustrate the code requirements as well as the code exceptions that are available for various occupancies.
