POSITION
Energy efficiency is the cheapest, quickest and cleanest way to meet rising energy needs, confront climate change and boost our economy. More than 30% of Washington’s greenhouse-gas emissions come from energy use in buildings. Making homes, businesses and public institutions more energy efficient will save money, create good local jobs, enhance energy security, slash global-warming pollution and speed economic recovery while reducing the need to invest in costly new generation. Climate change is real. Architects can make a difference.
AIA Washington Council and AIA Seattle support the Efficiency First Bill and hope you will help us pass it. The Efficiency First! legislative package will:
Promote super-efficient, low-energy-use building codes.
Require disclosure of buildings’ energy use information to prospective buyers.
Make our public buildings models of energy efficiency.
Finance energy-saving upgrades to existing buildings.
Reduce low-income households’ utility bills.
