Small Firm Management Series: Skill-Building for Small Firm Owners

Two Part Seminar presented by Rena M. Klein, FAIA

MARCH 19: Making Chaos Work for You: Keys to Small Firm Management

MARCH 26: Best Laid Plans: Business Planning for Small Firms

Program Description

Unpredictability is a fact of life for architectural firms. Firm owners must cope with constantly shifting workloads, respond quickly to promising opportunities and deal immediately with unexpected challenges. The only certainty is the uncertainty that small firm architects face.

Session I, Making Chaos Work for You, presents strategies for increasing productivity within this milieu of unpredictability, including case studies illustrating best practice models. Participants will learn about the major influences on productivity in small firms, the relationships between these influences, and practical techniques for continuous improvement.

Session II, Best Laid Plans, presents processes for business planning in small firms where the demands of daily practice often leave little time for planning. Participants will learn about the major components of a business plan – purpose, marketing, operations, and finance – and realistic procedures for plan development and implementation.

Each session will be highly interactive and provide opportunity for knowledge sharing among participants. Session 2 builds on and reinforces Session 1; however, each session can stand alone.

Both sessions to be held at AIA Seattle, noon – 1:30 PM; 1.5 LU each session
