At the close of the AIA Seattle Annual Meeting May 25, 2005 held at the International District/Chinatown Community Center and attended by some 50 AIA Seattle Members, AIA Seattle Past President Kristen M. Scott AIA, as Chair of the Nominating Committee, declared a valid election based on the meeting of quorum requirements (ballots cast at the Annual Meeting and in advance by mail, fax, or electronically, exceeding 10% of AIA and Associate AIA Members assigned to AIA Seattle and in good standing), and announced results of the election of Officers & Directors. Terms of the newly-elected Board members commence September 1, 2005; however, incoming members will join incumbent and outgoing Board members in Board activities commencing in June, including the annual "Mossroots" board/staff planning retreat, this year slated for Wednesday June 29.
The membership elected 1st VP Randy L. Everett AIA to become President effective September 2005, to succeed 2004-05 President Peter David Greaves AIA (who remains on the Board for an additional year as past President). Walter Schacht AIA, who previously served as Director, will come aboard as President-elect. Secretary Elaine Wine AIA and Treasurer John Bierly AIA will round out the Executive Committee, along with EVP Marga Rose Hancock Hon. AIA.
Julian Weber Assoc. AIA and Susan Jones AIA will serve one-year Special Director terms, with Dave Matthews AIA, Tony Stewart AIA, and Rick Zieve FAIA commencing three-year terms. Masaru Haruyama AIA, Jerry McDevitt AIA, Nancy Callery, and Tom Lawrence AIA continue as Directors.
Secretary Val Thomas FAIA, Special Directors Rick Zieve FAIA and Amy Portz AIA; Directors Brian Carter AIA, Tim Jewett AIA, and past President Kristen Scott AIA will complete their terms on the Board September 1.
At an upcoming regular Board meeting, the AIA Seattle Board of Directors will act on the recommendation of the Nominating Committee to elect two Advisory Members, whose two-year terms on the Board will also commence September 1, 2005. The terms of Christopher Bull, a principal at Edifice Construction who has served as CoChair of the Open House Committee 2002-05; Ellen Southard, a principal at Swenson Say Fagét; and Jackie Costigan, of Turner Construction, continue through September 2006. Jay Taylor of Magnusson Klemencic Associates and Alan Merkle, an attorney with the firm of Stoel Rives who also serves as the Mayor of Mercer Island, complete their terms as of September 1.
In other business: President Peter David Greaves AIA presided at the meeting, introducing members of the Board of Directors, Committee Chairs, and staff members present, and offering his "top ten" items of the 2004-05 Annual Report to the membership. Fellows/Honors Nominating Committee Chair Don Miles FAIA introduced national (the late Rick Buckley FAIA, for whom his NBBJ colleague John Pangrazio FAIA spoke, and Henry Hardnett FAIA) and local honorees, slated for futher celebration at the Honors Gala June 25. Past President Rena M. Klein AIA, Chair of the Knowledge by Design/AIA NW+ Pacific Region Conference scheduled for Seattle August 4-6, offered a preview of Conference highlights.
In further remarks, Peter noted the variety of experiences in Las Vegas of a large number of AIA Seattle Members in attendance the AIA Convention May 18-21, and announced with great pride and optimism the election of AIA Seattle 2000-02 President Norman Strong FAIA to a two-year as AIA Vice President. President-elect Randy invited involvement in action to advance the AIA mission/Plan 2010 in the critical areas of Advocacy, Community, Knowledge, and Value – and Future vision toward the AIA 150 observation slated for 2007.
In concluding the meeting, President Greaves once again thanked Annual Meeting cohosts Hoffman Construction, as well as all those completing terms on the Board and in Committee and staff roles. He congratulated and welcomed incoming Board members to the round of planning and governance activities that commence with an orientation for new Board members tentatively slated for June 22, and continue at the annual Mossroots Board/staff planning retreat June 29.
