In the 53rd annual AIA Seattle Honor Awards program, a panel of critical observers reviewed some 150 entries from Washington design professionals, offering remarks and announcing awards Monday evening November 8, 2004 before an enthusiastic assembly of nearly 700 fans and friends of design, at McCaw Hall. A jury comprising architect Ming Fung, Hodgetts + Fung, Culver City CA; Carlos Jimenez, Jimenez Studio/Rice University, Houston; and journalist/author John Morris Dixon FAIA, chief Editor of Progressive Architecture Magazine 1972-96 (jury bios here) reviewed, visited, and discussed local work. (Emergency circumstances required Mehrdad Yazdani, Cannon Design, Los Angeles, originally scheduled to participate, to cancel his visit.)

The jury selected nine projects for award (jury comments and complete project credits here), and commended the quality of the body of work represented by the submittals – noting that of the 150 entries, 52 survived the "first cut" of the jury review.

According to Honor Awards Committee Chair George Shaw AIA, the program sought to assemble work for the purpose of reflection "on the significance of the architecture of our region and its relevance to the human condition, life experiences, and the world in which we live." The jury's observations, in on-stage conversation and in their recorded comments, generally addressed concepts of the role of architecture and the architect in advancing community and global goals.
