At the 110th Birthday Party August 5, 2004

Kristen Scott & Peter David Greaves welcome celebrants.

Marking the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the signing of the charter establishing AIA in Seattle (by Daniel Burnham, then-Secretary of The AIA, on August 4, 1894), some 75 celebrants gathered at the Henry Art Gallery.

There, along with greetings by AIA Seattle President Kristen M. Scott AIA in the final days of her term at the helm, incoming President Peter David Greaves AIA offered historical references, including recognition to the AIA Seattle Members present with the longest tenure and those who have joined most recently (more below). Cohosts for the occasion, colleagues from Olympic Associates helped cut the 110th birthday cake and joined in song suitable to the occasion.

Songsters Paul Dermanis, Lee Copeland, Skip Norton, Don Martin, Phil Jacobson, Jim Klontz (hidden), Keith Howell, Karen Braitmayer, Kristen Scott, Marga Rose Hancock, Peter Greaves, Larry Sinnott, Justin Franklin -- and The Cake!

His colleagues applauded Jim Klontz AIA as the longest-tenured AIA Seattle Member present – with 55 years! Other contenders on hand: Paul Dermanis AIA, AIA Seattle 1994 Medallist Phillip L. Jacobson FAIA, Don Martin AIA, Dean Matthews AIA, and Skip Norton AIA. Newest Members present: Justin Franklin Associate AIA, Keith Howell AIA and Larry Sinnot AIA. Other honorable attendees included AIA Seattle Medallists Bill Bain FAIA (1997) and Lee G. Copeland FAIA (2000), AIA Seattle Honorary Member (and Henry Gallery Director) Richard Andrews, and a host of sunshine-crowned celebrants, including two less than one year old!

Attractions at the Henry also included James Turrell's Skyspace, recipient of an AIA Seattle 2003 Honor Award, and the current exhibit, Santiago Calatrava: The Architect's Studio.

Peter Greaves also invited all to join in anticipation of an especially gala celebration one year hence, on the occasion of the remarkable 111th anniversary, slated for observance as part of Knowlege by Design Case Study Conference August 4-6, 2005.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, EVERYONE!
