Advancing AIA Seattle Plan 2010:
Strategic Directions for 2004-05

Approaching the 111th Birthday of AIA's establishment in Seattle August 4, 2005, AIA Seattle's Knowledge by Design Case Study Conference offers the opportunity to manifest a paradigm shift in the fundamental perception of architects' roles in their communities and practices.

Knowledge-seeking workgroup: Ben Gist, Emiko Atherton, Chris Bull, Carolyn Forbes, Rick Zieve

Anticipated substantial changes in the organizational environment include the Fall 2004 reopening of the AIA Seattle storefront facility, a recasting of the Home of the Month program, an active 2005 WA legislative session, and new patterns in AIA inter-component relations including revenue-sharing.

Summing up: Peter Greaves, Randy Everett, Rena Klein, Teresa Rodriguez, Amy Portz, Donald King

COMMUNITY: Membership Connection
"Hard hats, hard liquor, hard rock:" have fun at Membership Meetings! - including Grand Reopening of AIA Seattle HQ (10/04?).
Sustain the momentum of the Membership Pilot Program utilizing a marketing assistance approach to both allied businesses and member firms, in "focus group" style.
Facilitate Board members' contact with new Members and connection with committee activities, and consider holding regular (monthly?) new Member orientation sessions.
Systematically support Board and Committee Chair relationships in producing sponsorship, locations (e.g. newly-opened facilities), and subject of programs.

Chowtime: Carolyn Forbes, Clarence Kwan, Masaru Haruyama, Tom Lawrence, Peter Greaves, Donald King, Amy Portz

Professional Development/
The AIA KNOWLEDGE Agenda

Inform design professionals and their allies about the techniques and value of case studies as a basic tool for learning in practice, using the 9/04 and 8/05 Case Study sequence as a strategic centerpiece.
Incorporate a variety of current topics into strong annual program of events.
Anticipate/plan AIA Healthy Communities Conference in Seattle in 2006.
As/if CE becomes mandatory in WA, make sure to hold the 'high road' for AIA Seattle brand in CE.
· Involve design, development, and building disciplines in knowledge creation and sharing.

ADVOCACY: Community Connection
Expand the story line about individuals and their achievements in communications within and beyond AIA Seattle.
Consider alternative venues for public information about residential design as the Home of the Month program takes new forms.
Encourage individual outreach, e.g. Associate Members self-initiated engagement in school programs.
Engage Members in organizational business, particularly around legislative affairs.

Governance/Liaison/Administration
· Sustain systematic inclusivity of professional and practice diversity, as a prime source of organizational strength, creativity, and flexibility.
Mobilize organizational liaison and relationships in the face of possible regulatory shifts, and support legislative liaison (AIA WA Council).
Bring AIA Big Sibs energy and ideas to bear locally.
Nurture Board-Committee connections, and "committee leadership succession planning."
· Activate Board alumni/ae.
Carrying forward business plan initiative, intensify investment planning; take an active role in development of plans for inter-component revenue-sharing.
Press for maximization/efficiency of AIA local-state-regional-national system.

Initiatives
Apply innovation, inclusivity, and practice/teaching connection in planning and implementing Knowledge by Design/111th Birthday (August 2005)
 Formalize "AIA Seattle leadership school."
· As part of 11th Birthday observance, develop historical elements of AIA Seattle web site.

Board Commitments
 Attend Board meetings.
Stay current on AIA Seattle programs and activities by regularly reviewing The AIA Seattle Architect and/or www.aiaseattle.org.
Initiate/retain connections to committee activity, encourage others to get involved.
Encourage colleagues to attend, host, and sponsor AIA programs and activities.
