

AIA Seattle Past President Steven Arai AIA, as Chair of the Nominating Committee, announced results of the election of Officers & Directors at the Annual Meeting held May 21 at REI Seattle Flagship Store. Terms of the newly-elected Board members commence September 1, 2003; however, incoming members will join incumbent and outgoing Board members at the annual "Mossroots" board/staff planning retreat, this year slated for June 18.
The membership elected Kristen M. Scott AIA to become President effective September 2003, to succeed 2002-03 President Rena M. Klein AIA (who will remain on the Board for an additional year as past President). Peter David Greaves AIA, currently serving as Treasurer, will come aboard as President-elect. Secretary Sue Partidge AIA and Treasurer Teresa Rodriguez AIA will round out the Executive Committee, along with EVP Marga Rose Hancock Hon. AIA.
Ben Gist Associate AIA and Clarence C. Kwan AIA will serve one-year Special Director Terms, while Nancy Callery AIA and Tom Lawrence AIA will commence three-year terms. Brian Carter AIA, Donald I. King FAIA and Tim Jewett AIA continue as Directors.
Secretary Marilyn Brockman AIA, Directors Elaine Gagnon AIA, William H. Kreager FAIA, and past President Steven N. Arai AIA will complete their terms on the Board September 1; Director Douglas Bailey AIA has stepped down for the remaining weeks of his term. As prescribed by the Bylaws, the Board selected John Bierly AIA to fill the unexpired portion (to 9/05) of the Director term vacated by the election of Teresa Rodriguez to serve as Treasurer.
At the regular Board meeting of April 16, the AIA Seattle Board of Directors approved the recommendation of the Nominating Committee to elect two Advisory Members, whose two-year terms on the Board will also commence September 1, 2003. Alan Merkle, an attorney with the firm of Stoel Rives who also serves as Mayor of Mercer Island, and Gail Dubrow, Professor of Urban Design and Planning and Associate Dean of the CAUP at the University of Washington, succeed Stanton Beck, Esq. of Lane Powell Spears Lubersky and Jim Duncan, FACEC of Sparling as their terms expire. Advisory Members Roger Anderson of GLY Construction, Barbara Swift ASLA of Swift & Company Landscape Architects, and Jay Taylor of Magnusson Klemencic Associates continue their terms.
In other business: 1st VP Kristen Scott presided at the meeting, offering the Annual Report to the membership in the absence of President Rena Klein. Fellows/Honors Council President Roger B. Williams FAIA introduced national and local honorees, slated for futher celebration at the Honors Gala June 7. Norman Strong AIA, a member of the AIA national Board of Directors representing the AIA NW+Pacific Region, presented a brief report of the AIA Convention May 8-10, 2003 in San Diego.
In concluding the meeting, President-elect Scott thanked Annual Meeting cohost Hoffman Construction, represented by Douglas Winn AIA, as well as all those completing terms on the Board. She congratulated and welcomed incoming Board members to the round of planning and governance activities that commence with an orientation for new Board members on June 13, and continue at the annual Mossroots Board/staff planning retreat.
