At the annual Seattle Times/AIA Home of the Year event on Friday evening March 14, a multi-disciplinary jury announced their selection from among 10 projects featured during 2002 in the Seattle Times/AIA Open House program as the Home of the Year. Jurors Sian Roberts AIA of Miller/Hull, Nancy Satterberg of Satterberg Desonier Dumo Interior Design, Inc., and Lane Williams AIA, Lane Williams Architects, offered comments on this year's choice, the Nuler-Cudahy Residence by David Coleman Architecture. The West Seattle residence originally appeared as the Times/AIA Open House May 12, 2002. Times reporter Elizabeth Rhodes's article described it as "a dynamic home with a modern viewpoint and a view." The Seattle Times Pacific Northwest Magazine of March 16 headlines the Home of the Year.

The Seattle Times Special Features Editor William Ristow joined AIA Seattle President-elect Kristen M. Scott AIA and Times Open House Committee CoChair Laura Kraft AIA in welcoming several hundred attendees to the event, held at Kane Hall on the UW campus.

This year marks the 49th year of the unique partnership of The Seattle Times and AIA Seattle, and the enduring partnership that has helped advance public exposure to quality in residential design. AIA Seattle Honorary Member Margery Phillips, in 1954 a member of the Times reporting staff, attended the event and received a round of applause for her role in creating this special program. Kristen Scott heralded the 50th anniversary observance which has begun to take shape for 2004.

Boston architect Jeremiah Eck FAIA, author of The Distinctive Home: A Vision of Timeless Design (Taunton Press, 2003) gave the keynote address on "Principles of House: Saltbox to Sopranos." Continuing the program of observations on the state of residential design, the jury engaged a dialog on the featured homes before presenting their selection. A book-signing hosted by University Book Store concluded an engaging evening.
