The American Institute of Architect has announced the selection of individuals from our area for national recognition. Among 62 individuals elected to the AIA College of Fellows for 2003, a jury selected five Washington architects, four nominated by AIA Seattle:
The Jury of Fellows also advanced Bruce E. Blackmer FAIA, of AIA Spokane. Their local and national colleagues will celebrate with these and other 2003 honorees from around the US and the world, at AIA Convention in San Diego May 8-10 (including the AIA Seattle Dinner Friday evening May 9) - and back home at the AIA Seattle Honors Gala slated for June 7, where AIA 2004 President Eugene Hopkins FAIA will help "bring the medals home."
In the original presentation of the qualifications of these individuals to the AIA Seattle Board of Directors, Fellows Nominating Committee then-Chair John Nesholm FAIA presented these summaries of achievements relevant to the criteria for this recognition of achievement of national significance:
Tony Gale FAIA: His recent years as Seattle's City Architect have focused Tony Gale's environmentalist ethic and his extensive experience in practice, combining commitment and credibility to his master-minding of the Emerald City's burgeoning national prominence as a sustainable design showplace. His leadership has helped craft the City of Seattle's notable energy awareness and codes programs using the LEED standard, and guided the design of major public projects including OMA/LMN's Seattle Public Library and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson/Bassetti Architects' Seattle City Hall as models of environmental sensitivity. The Jury of Fellows recognized his achievements in working with a government organization "to ensure the advancement of the living standards of people through their improved environment." Daniel Williams FAIA, a member of both the AIA national COTE and the AIA Seattle COTE, which Tony cochaired, sponsored the nomination.
William Kreager FAIA: Based on a lengthy, successful and thoughtful record of design achievement in housing (most recently as a principal of Mithun), Bill Kreager has provided active leadership to the AIA Housing PIA, helping to develop the knowledge base and also public awareness about the value of good housing design. In addition to his AIA responsibilities, Bill has responded generously to invitations to speak and lead in other organizations - local, national, and international - related to housing interests. AIA Seattle 1990 Medallist Norman J. Johnston FAIA sponsored his nomination.
Val Thomas FAIA: In a career combining design and development, Val Thomas has materialized significant projects that bring grace to Seattle neighborhoods. Their residents and his fellow professionals alike recognize the design quality of the Broadway Market, Queen Anne School, and numerous similarly successful projects. Val Thomas Inc. engages in the development of urban infill housing and mixed-use projects. David Wright FAIA sponsored his nomination.
Rick Zieve FAIA: The designs of Rick Zieve, with NBBJ - including Safeco Field, home to the Seattle Mariners; major additions at SeaTac Airport; and the innovative Seattle Justice Center in the city's new civic campus - have significantly shaped the skyline and the urban experience of Seattle. They have earned both professional and public accolades, and advanced both the art and the science of design. 1987 AIA Seattle Medallist Bill Bain FAIA sponsored his nomination.
Bruce E. Blackmer FAIA, of AIA Spokane and a principal of Northwest Architectural Company, has distinguished himself in service to the profession. Following his recent service in a three-year term on the national AIA Board of Directors during which he served as a liaison to the national PIA Council, the AIA national membership elected him to serve as a national Vice President, for 2003. David M. Scott FAIA sponsored his nomination.
