Knowledge by Design Overview
AIA Seattle and Conference Chair Rena Klein AIA thank all who joined in the knowledge quest at Knowledge by Design in Seattle August 4-6, 2005, a gathering and exchange among practice and education communities within and beyond the territory of the AIA NW + Pacific Region. Using geographic diversity as a laboratory for learning, some 400 conference attendees shared knowledge from case study submittals based on significant projects from around the region, chosen for both design excellence and a range of achievements required for design success.

At the Opening Reception 8/3 at Seattle Central Library, AIA Seattle President Peter David Greaves AIA and Seattle City Councilmember Peter Steinbrueck AIA joined Rena Klein in welcoming attendees to Seatlte, and previewing the program of interactive Plenary Gatherings, Knowledge Sessions with NW design masters and innovators, urban explorations on tours of projects and neighborhoods, and the Saturday night highlight presentation of the premier AIA Seattle Knowledge by Design Case Study Prize, including a $5,000 cash award.

Wrapping up four lively and lovely days in summery Seattle, conferees and local hosts celebrated at the 111th Birthday Progressive Party, honoring the signing by then-AIA President Daniel Burnham of the charter recognizing the establishment of a chapter of The American Institute of Architects in Seattle, on August 3, 1894 (on view at AIA Seattle Gallery). AIA 2005 President Douglas L Steidl FAIA and AIA EVP/CEO Norman L. Koonce FAIA offered Institute Greetings on the occasion.

"A Conference with a Difference," as Chair Rena Klein termed it, involved guided interaction in all elements, to support the personalization of knowledge and exploration of the value of exchanging knowledge in a collegial atmosphere. Recognizing the success of the Conference in advancing the AIA Knowledge Initiative, AIA Board Knowledge Committee Chair Shannon Kraus AIA presented this citation:
"The AIA Board Knowledge Committee is privileged to award this Distinguished Service Citation upon Rena M Klein AIA for her outstanding dedication and commitment to the profession, and in appreciation for her contributions as a leader among component presidents in organizing and executing the Knowledge by Design Conference to advance the body of knowledge for architects and enhance the impact of the AIA."

Business of the AIA NW+Pacific Region conducted during the Conference included the election of Jim Suehiro AIA to a three-year term on the AIA national Board of Directors. Previous Directors in attendance included L. Jane Hastings FAIA (with Norman J. Johnston FAIA, the two of them introduced as having attended more AIA NW+Pacific Region Conferences than any others present), James Harris FAIA, Richard Hobbs FAIA, Jud Marquardt FAIA, Ted Garduque FAIA, Bruce Blackmer FAIA, and John Baker AIA. Their presence added luster to the presentation of the Region Medal of Honor to Martin Crennen FAIA, who served the Region as Director 1994-96.

'Learning by laughing' characterized delightful parties held each evening: the Wednesday Opening Reception at Seattle Central Library which included welcoming remarks by Seattle Public Library Capital Projects Manager Alex Harris; the Thursday BandFest featuring four bands with architects as members (Buddha Blue, Creeping Time, DeadLoad, and Six of One) at Consolidated Works, the Friday evening keynote session at Bell Harbor International Conference Center at Pier 66, and the 111th Birthday Progressive Party at the Polson Building, hosted by Bassetti Architects, Mahlum Architects, and Miller|Hull Partnership with the Society of Design Administration.

Throughout the Conference, hosts from the AIA Seattle Board of Directors and staff and other volunteers (partial list below) helped guide visitors in their explorations of Seattle's urban and natural wonders.
