Advancing Residential Design

AIA Seattle seeks to advance a tradition of engaging the public in the experience of residential design, and to invite ideas and involvement by all AIA Seattle architects and design professionals in exploration of emerging possibilities.

"Talk with an Architect"
Supporting the public conection with new and refreshed programs and resources including

. Invigorating a Home of the Year program (March or April 06?) including highlight public event(s) as well as professional development programs for architects seeking to engage public interest in their work;

… Offering training for emerging professionals and others in techniques for engaging public interest in residential design (CE event 1/26/06);

… Applying new branding concepts in public programs reformatted to demonstate the interactive design process; and promoting architects' presence as resources to the public in a range of venues (e.g. Saturday Seminar, Home Show(s), Phinney Home Design Fair 1/29/05, etc.);

… Sharing/learning with AIA colleagues from around the US engaged in local residential design/housing programs, via a report from Carl Dominquez AIA on his participation in the national AIA Housing Roundtable (including showcasing Seattle-area housing design innovation at a proposed AIA national housing/urban design/sustainability conference in Seattle 9/06)

… Engaging strategic partners in public-directed programs that highlight both single and multi-family residential projects, emphasizing not only the architects' role but the design and development team, including clients and regulatory partners;

… Supporting knowledgeable architects in advocacy for sound public policy that facilitates the creation of excellent housing.

Background: Elements of current programs supporting public understanding of residential design include:

• Media partnership with NW Home + Garden magazine, launched with the first Open House May 2005 (most recent Open House 9/18/05)

AIA Seattle booth at the Seattle Home Show (next: February 18-26, 2006)

• AIA Seattle Saturday Seminar, Resource Center for Architecture, and E-source Center – what next?

• For the public: possible event March 06? (in the tradition of the Home of the Year program in place 1954-2004)

• Further public-directed publications/tours highlightling multi-family residential design (a la Housing the Northwest)

• For the profession: continuation of annual residential design forums (e.g. Going to Market June 05) offering current information and knowledge about residential design issues and opportunities
