The AIA Seattle Diversity Roundtable, in partnership with colleagues at the UW Department of Achitecture, Pomegranate Center, and Fremont Public Association, have big ideas for the 2005 Summer Solstice Procession - with a series of events that commenced with a late-March visit to Marra Farm, in Seattle's historic, diverse, and proud South Park neighborhood.

Following in the path initiated by 2005 Denice Hunt K-12 Intern Greg Squires and his project partner Mark Haizlip in a garden shed design/build project for Marra Farm undertaken with students at nearby Concord Elementary School, Roundtable folk including Nancy Callery AIA and M. Mario Campos AIA toured the site with Jim Diers and Milenko Matanovic, gathering strength from the land and a vision for a long-term project with and for the community and its young leaders.

The action continued with a Marra Farm Garden Party Saturday morning May 14 when Mark and Greg and the multi-generational party pictured above among others, assisted and/or observed construction of a garden shed to include a teaching bench, in a joyful spirit.

Watch for details soon on this exciting project with 'AIA 150' implications.

Again this year, Procession proceeds benefit the Roundtable's program to support students from diverse backgrounds at the University of Washington College of Architecture and Urban Planning – targeting advanced-level endowment of a second student scholarship, the AIA Seattle Fund for Diversity. (In 1998, the Roundtable endowed the Denice Hunt K-12 Internship, honoring Diversity Roundtable founding member Denice Johnson Hunt AIA, the first woman of African American heritage to serve as President of an AIA component.)
