Design, Density, & Affordability
AIA Seattle and The Seattle Times (see Home & Real Estate article by Elizabeth Rhodes 5/30/04) welcome all to visit architect-designed multi-family projects demonstrating design, density, and affordability, in the 8th annual Multifamily Housing Tour on Sunday, June 6th from noon to 5pm.

The AIA Seattle Housing the Northwest Committee solicited entries of recent projects, and on May 5 convened a jury including architect John Eggleston AIA, developer Allison Lorig, housing development consultant Tory Laughlin-Taylor, and Skanska USA vice-president Tony Stewart AIA, to consider projects submitted for their consideration. The jury selected five projects for feature and tour, singling them out for their contributions in integrating design, affordability and density into multi-unit residentail architecture in Puget Sound.

Each project will have at least one unit open for public tour from noon to 5pm on June 6th.

According to the Committee, "This program provides the community with a yearly snapshot of how we as a city and region are doing in terms of addressing housing needs in our growing metropolitan area. Our jury will use the featured projects to provoke dialog and commentary among readers and visitors, and hope that the selections will serve as models for future development that works for residents and communities, as well as exemplifying good architecture."

In June 1997, The Seattle Times and AIA Seattle produced the first annual "Housing the Northwest" feature. The June Open House advances the spirit of the 50-year-old Seattle Times/AIA Home of the Month program, expressing a range of housing choices beyond the single-family residence – and the collaborative achievements of owners/developers, architects, builders, community members and agencies that make them possible.
