Scholars Series: Dr. Vikramakitya Prakash Associate AIA

Thursday May 27, 2004, noon luncheon, by advance reservation only
Fairmont Olympic Hotel, Seattle

Dr. Vikramaditya ("Vikram") Prakash grew up in Chandigarh, India and received a BArch from the Chandigarh College of Architecture (1986), and an MA (1989) and PhD (1994) in History and Theory of Architecture and Urbanism from Cornell University. He taught at Arizona State University as a visiting Assistant Professor from 1994-1996 before coming to the University of Washington in Fall 1996. Here, he served as Associate Dean for External Affairs for the College of Architecture and Urban Planning from 2001 to 2002, directing activities with external constituencies, particularly those concerned with extension education and applied research. In late July 2002, he began service as Chair of the Department of Architecture.

In addition to conducting design studios, Dr. Prakash teaches introductory and advanced courses in non-Western architecture, and graduate seminars in modernism and culture theory. Dr. Prakash bases his work on "Architecture Culture Studies," a new sub-discipline that examines architecture's use of the interdisciplinary perspectives of culture studies - a topic on which he has organized several international conferences and presented numerous papers.

In 2002, the University of Washington Press published his book Chandigarh's Le Corbusier:The Struggle for Modernity in Postcolonial India. With colleagues Professors Frank Ching (UW CAUP) and Mark Jarzombek (MIT), Vikram has undertaken work on a new textbook, A Global History of Architecture.

We urge Fellows/Honors Council attendees to bring young architects and colleagues as their guests, to share the inspiration and experience of this presentation.

Cordially,
