In association with Residential Design Forum 2004: Engaging Spaces

Sarah Susanka AIA, author of The Not So Big House (The Taunton Press, 1998), returns to Seattle in response to popular demand, to keynote the 50th anniversary Seattle Times/AIA Home of the Year event. She will offer observations on trends in residential design, with references to her latest book, Home by Design (Taunton, 2004).

At the Friday evening presentation, Open House Committee CoChairs Christopher Bull and Laura Kraft AIA have invited a local panel to join Sarah Susanka in commentary on residential design, referencing both the history of the program and the residences featured in the Open House program during 2003.

Local panelists:
. James Castanes AIA
has had several homes he designed featured in the program, including the 1987 Home of the Year.
• L. Jane Hastings FAIA
(AIA Seattle 1995 Medallist) has participated in the program recently as well as in the early years, working with AIA Seattle committees and Seattle Times journalists as the program has taken shape.
• John Nuler
brings the perspective of a participating owner as well as an Open House visitor; honors for design of the Nuler-Cudahy residence, by David Coleman AIA, include 2002 Seattle Times/AIA Home of the Year.

Lobby exhibits will include residences featured as Times/AIA Open Houses during 2003, as well as entries in the "OHo 2024" program, inviting imagination of the future of residential design. Following the presentations - including the 2003 Home of the Year selection - Sarah Susanka will sign copies of her book, at a reception hosted by University Book Store with AIA Seattle and Swenson Say Fagét.

The Friday evening event highlights AIA Seattle's Residential Design Forum, a series of professional seminars targeting residential design practice, slated for March 12-13.
