Disaster Preparedness & Response

The Disaster Preparedness & Response Committee informs and coordinates design professionals’ action in preparing for and responding to disaster conditions.

Ongoing activities include offering seminars and workshops to prepare design professionals to serve our communities and clients, as well as preparing for and participating in recovery efforts. Disaster Preparedness & Response hosts Safety Assessment Program (SAP) evaluator trainings in the Puget Sound area, and assists in training throughout Cascadia. The Committee coordinates with local agencies, including the Office of Emergency Management, the Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections, the Office of Planning & Community Development, and similar regional county and state agencies. Much of our work occurs in collaboration with SEAW (structural engineers) and ASCE (civil engineers) in order to best leverage a coordinated effort.

In early 2017, near-tireless advocacy for Good Samaritan legislation that provides liability protection for design professionals volunteering post-disaster and Portability of Licensure laws finally passed and is incorporated into the Washington Administrative Code.

All efforts have the ultimate goal of creating greater resilience in our communities through building a network of architects to help before and after a disaster.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

The Committee meets the second Wednesday of every other month at noon at the AIA Seattle office. To receive upcoming meeting and event details, subscribe to our email list. AIA Seattle members, allied members and sponsors are encouraged to join as well as other professionals in the design community. Bring your interests and expertise in sustainability & regeneration, hazard mitigation, resilience, and climate adaptation to the conversation.

The Disaster Preparedness & Response Committee serves AIA Seattle’s Profession vision.
