Current Topic(s) and Activity:

December 2005: Advancing Residential Design
April 2005: Designing Community - A Tour of Danish Cohousing
Recently returned from a 2-month sabbatical in Denmark funded by the UW Valle program, Seattle architects Grace Kim AIA and Mike Mariano AIA of Schemata Workshop share photos and insights from over 20 cohousing communities. While a relatively new housing concept in the US, cohousing is widely understood and respected by Danes. Grace and Mike were welcomed into a variety of urban and rural communities for extended visits and participation in meals and work days. Resident demographics cover a wide range and represent a variety of occupations and income levels. Most of the communities visited are well established, some over 30 years old and many with extended waiting lists for joining the community.
