About the Council:
Beginning in the early1980s, AIA Seattle has convened meetings of individuals recognized by AIA local and national honors and service - including locally-based architects elevated to the AIA College of Fellows, past Presidents of AIA Seattle and of AIA Washington Council, AIA Seattle Honorary Members, and recipients of the AIA Seattle Community Service Award. Originally known as the Senior Council, since 2000 it operates as the AIA Seattle Fellows/Honors Council. The AIA Seattle President appoints the Council President on an annual basis when making committee chair assignments. The Council President serves ex officio on the Fellows/Honors Nominating Committee, which oversees and nurtures nominations for AIA local and national honors and their celebration at the annual Honors Gala.
Beginning the mid-1980s, the Council has held luncheon meetings at the Olympic Hotel in Seattle, typically 8-10 annually open to all (by advance reservation), as collegial gatherings each featuring remarks by a distinguished colleague. Frequently and desirably, senior colleagues invite and host emerging professionals at these inspiring session; the presence of family members, friends, and colleagues from design and other disciplines adds to the pleasure and richness of the occasion.
By recording the sessions, AIA Seattle has developed a valuable historical archive of reflections and observations of some of the area's distinguished architects and others whose achievements have advanced the design professions and the AIA Seattle mission. In a collegial and informal setting, presenters typically reflect on their careers in a thoughtful way, often referring to significant personal and professional influences and to their own work in a story-telling fashion rather than a serious design or topical presentation. Interaction with attendees often adds insights and humor, and supplements the historical value of the series.
