On recommendation of the AIA Seattle Codes Committee, the AIA Seattle Board of Director has joined with the AIA Seattle Housing Action Task Force, the staff of Seattle's Department of Design Construction and Land Use (DCLU) and DCLU Director Diane Sugimura, to support the proposed ADU Code Revision Ordinance.
The proposed revision to the Land Use Code would allow detached accessory dwelling units to be constructed on lots in single family zones, according to the development standards set forth in the code. Along with fellow design professionals, AIA Seattle Members believe that Seattle does need new options for housing - a neighborhood-friendly version of density through design. As proposed, the code will help enable the manifestation of visions presented in the Housing Design Demonstration Project undertaken by AIA Seattle in 2000, in cooperation with the Mayor's Office, DCLU, and other public and private housing-related entities, and help create opportunities for denser and more affordable housing, while maintaining the fabric of single-family neighborhoods.
We urge our fellow design professionals to join us in supporting the proposed revisions.
