TA Tour: Seattle Public Library Branches Tour
Visit the Ballard, Beacon Hill, Capitol Hill and North East Branch Libraries, all built or expanded under the "Libraries for All" bond measure to upgrade the Seattle Public Library.
BALLARD LIBRARY
The building was designed by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson with a "green roof" planted with more than 18,000 low-water-use plants, sweeping to the north to bathe the interior with indirect light; a lower roof section provides an intimate scale for reading along the north wall.
BEACON HILL LIBRARY

Designed by Carlson Architects, the Beacon Hill Library uses sweeping roof forms, which allow natural light to flood the building, to provide a visual landmark and establish a focal point for the community.
CAPITOL HILL LIBRARY
The Capitol Hill Library, a collaboration by Johnston Architects and Cutler Anderson Architects, focuses on environmental sensitivity given physical form by wrapping the building in a "vertical garden," extending inside the building as well as out. NORTH EAST LIBRARY
The Miller|Hull Partnership designed the expansion of the North East Branch, preserving the pavilion-like feel of the original building by maintaining the roof peak and avoiding the installation of ductwork along the ceiling. The building is naturally ventilated with mechanically controlled windows and recycled material was used wherever possible.

The new United States Federal Courthouse was built under this program, and replaces the Courthouse on Fifth Avenue built more than a half century ago and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The new building contains many interesting design features including a one acre landscaped public plaza running the full length of the Seventh Avenue side and a lobby containing a 15 by 60-foot long reflecting pool, which separates secure and non-secure areas.
