Knowledge by Design/August 4-6, Seattle Track: Tools / Technology

Conference overview
Last modified 5/20/05

Imagine the future of technology applications adaptable to your practice, through study of innovative tools and materials serving various aspects of the design and building process.

TA2 3D/4D Design/Build Collaboration Explore architect/builder collaboration using Building Information Modeling for pre-design/design development, defining future trends for design techniques that involve rapid and frequent cost feedback/design analysis to aid in building project direction. Presenters:
- Jim Bedrick AIA, Webcor Builders
- Tony Rinella Assoc AIA, CIO of Anshen + Allen Architects, SF
(2 LUs / 2 HSW)

TC3 3D/4D The Design Advantage Emergence of new 4D technology integrates the 3D model with the project schedule, laser scanning survey instruments, and project intranet sites for information exchange. These technologies are changing the landscape for the project team, requiring effective collaboration during the design and construction phases of a project. Case studies include: Frank Gehry's Experience Music Project and the OMA/LMN Seattle Central Library. Presenter:
- Dale Stenning, Hoffman Construction
(2 LUs / 2 HSW)

TD3 BIM: From Concept to Move-In Using Building Information Modeling (BIM), NBBJ progressively integrates models with consultants for the integration of programming, design, structural, and mechanical analyses, while satisfying the needs of conventional documentation requirements and achieving high LEED results. Local Case studies include: US Federal Courthouse and VA Skilled Nursing Facility.
Presenter:
- Alex Maxim Assoc AIA, NBBJ
(2 LUs)

FA1 Cool Tools for Designers
Mobile computing will transform the future of design work. After surveying new tools that gather visual information, client opinions, activity usage and dimensional information, we'll combine stories of design projects with live demos of interesting new design tools, including digital sketching. Presenter:
- Nancy Yen-Wen Cheng AIA, University of Oregon
(2 LUs)
