In addition to built architectural work, we are expanding the submittal categories to allow for a breadth of work at all scales.

Barry Bergdoll is The Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art and Professor of modern architectural history in the Department of Art History at Columbia University. Holding a B.A. from Columbia, an M.A. from King’s College, Cambridge, and a Ph.D. from Columbia, his broad interests center on modern architectural history with a particular emphasis on France and Germany since 1800. Bergdoll has organized, curated, and consulted on many major exhibitions of 19th and 20th-century architecture at MoMA and elsewhere. In addition, he has organized innovative workshops on current issues leading to exhibitions at MoMA. He served as Chairman of the Department of Art History and Archeology at Columbia University from 2004 to 2007 and President of the Society of Architectural Historians from 2006 to 2008, in addition to participation in juries, editorial boards, and other professional organizations.

Vanessa Kassabian AIA, Design Director, Snøhetta
After graduating Tulane University, Vanessa spent 5 years in Washington, DC working in architecture before moving to New York to complete a MARCH at Pratt Institute. She worked at Davis Brody Bond for 5 years on projects ranging from an Engineering School at Northwestern University to the World Trade Center Memorial. Before coming to Snøhetta, she spent 2 years working for OMA NY / REX as a project architect on the Wyly Theater in Dallas, TX, focusing on the structure and facade of the building; Caltech Institute Computer Science Facility; Museum Plaza, Louisville, KY facade team and Governors Island open space competition in New York. Vanessa is currently the Design Director of Snøhetta in New York.
 

Lisa Iwamoto
Lisa Iwamoto is partner of IwamotoScott Architecture, a practice formed in partnership with Craig Scott. IwamotoScott has received numerous awards and honors including: Architectural Record’s Design Vanguard 2012, World’s Coolest Office for Obscura Digital Headquarters from Inc. Magazine and Architizer; 10 to Watch from California Home and Design; Emerging Voices; Grand Prize for the History Channel’s City of the Future: San Francisco 2108; California Council of the AIA Emerging Talent Award; Young Architects award from the Architectural League of New York; and AIA awards for various projects from the San Francisco, Boston, and New Jersey chapters. The work has been published in hundreds of national and international journals, and been in numerous exhibitions.

Iwamoto is Associate Professor at University of California Berkeley. Her research focuses on digital fabrication and material technologies for architecture. Her best-selling book, Digital Fabrications: Architectural and Material Techniques was published in 2009 by Princeton Architectural Press as part of their series Architecture Briefs. Iwamoto received her Master of Architecture degree with Distinction from Harvard University, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Colorado.

David Salmela FAIA

David Salmela, FAIA practices in Duluth, Minnesota. He has worked in architecture since 1969 and has lived in Minnesota all of his life. He has won over 50 regional and national design awards, among them his Brandenburg’s Ravenwood Studio in Ely, MN and the Emerson Sauna in rural Duluth, MN (both won National AIA Honor Awards for architecture in 1998 and 2005, respectively), which represent his broad assembly of work. In 2007 he received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the University of Minnesota and in 2008, was presented the Minnesota AIA Gold Medal. David’s work has been featured, nationally and internationally, in Abitare, Architectural Record, Architectural Review, Graphis, Architecture, ID, Monocle, Hauser and Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary Architecture. Thomas Fisher, University of Minnesota Dean of the College of Design, has published two books on Salmela’s work, the monograph Salmela/Architect (2005) and The Invisible Element of Place the Architecture of David Salmela (2011). Both books were published by the University of Minnesota Press.

Recognizing the idea expressed in an unbuilt, planning, or conceptual project. Submittal should clearly illustrate the project concept and/or organization.

Making
Recognizing the superlative object, detail, or part of the whole of a larger built project. Submittal should clearly present the underlying idea behind the design. Explain the execution of the concept through the manufacturing, fabrication or installation and realization of the solution.
