<![endif]-->As founder and director of the People’s Waterfront Coalition, Cary Moon has worked tirelessly to do the right thing on Seattle’s downtown waterfront. Since the earthquake seriously damaged the Alaskan Way Viaduct, Cary has persistently and successfully advocated to the public and decision makers a sustainable vision for the waterfront, fighting an uphill battle to put fresh solutions on the table. Her hard work paid off this year, when key partners in city, county and state governments reframed the waterfront conversation around mobility rather than car capacity. Cary’s waterfront efforts, along with her previous work with the Seattle Design Commission and the Pioneer Square Planning Committee, have significantly raised our consciousness on critical issues of our environment. Jay Taylor Jay A. Taylor is widely recognized for his skill as a structural engineer and his commitment to design excellence. His clients include some of the best known architects in the world, including Frank O. Gehry & Associates, Steven Holl Architects and David Chipperfield Architects. As a Senior Vice-President at Magnusson Klemencic and Associates he focuses on highly visible cultural facilities such as libraries, performing arts centers and museums. His work in the Puget Sound region includes the Seattle Central Library, the Olympic Sculpture Park, the Bellevue Art Museum and the Museum of Glass. His ability to collaborate with architects who are pushing the boundaries of design stems from his fundamental understanding of the relationship between architecture and engineering. Jay has served as an AIA Seattle Advisory Board Member, as well as co-chair of the 2007 Honor Awards.
Gene Duvernoy As president of the Cascade Land Conservancy, Gene Duvernoy has developed a unique conservation approach that includes an appreciation for placemaking, community engagement, and market-based realities. Gene has been instrumental in the conservation and stewardship of more than 100,000 acres of critical resource lands and landscapes throughout Washington State. Unique among conservation leaders, he honors the integral roles that design and planning play in achieving his goals. Duvernoy has been a leader on the steering committee of the Seattle Great City Initiative, to which he brings strategic thinking about the design of cities and a knack for engaging diverse interests to realize a common vision, ultimately leading Seattle to become a model of economic and environmental sustainability. In May 2005, Duvernoy was one of the many partners who launched The Cascade Agenda, a 100-year vision to conserve great landscapes while creating great cities and towns. Allied Organization Award: Seattle Architecture Foundation The Allied Organization Award recognizes an organization which has notably contributed to the goals of AIA Seattle. This year’s recipient, the Seattle Architecture Foundation, is a longtime ally and collaborator. By awakening people to the profound impact of design, Seattle Architecture Foundation has built a local community that is actively engaged in shaping our built environment. Since its inception, the Foundation has maintained a commitment to design excellence and inspiration that has informed a wide and effective range of educational offerings for the public, tourists, families and children. This year’s publication of a guide to downtown Seattle architecture is a monumental achievement. The passion that SAF inspires from its legions of volunteers, and the connections it makes between citizens and the world around them, are testament to the singular importance of its work and mission. Community Service Award 2007: This award recognizes an individual or group for the achievement of the significant community service objectives and for exemplifying the application of architectural skills, values, and dedication to the advancement of community goals. This year’s award goes not to an individual, but to an organization: Seattle Housing Authority. Seattle Housing Authority, recognized as one of the most innovative housing authorities in the country, has made an extraordinary commitment to outstanding design as a right, not a privilege, for its 26,000 low-income tenants. Recognizing that the design of places has great bearing on social, economic and physical well-being, the Housing Authority has engaged in a major initiative to redefine and renew its housing stock, transforming former low-income enclaves of poverty into award-winning mixed-income communities at NewHolly, Rainier Vista and High Point. Through this ambitious program and with a commitment to outstanding design, the Housing Authority is replacing all of the original low-income housing that serves residents with incomes below 30 percent of the median, and is adding more than 1,000 new units of low-income housing serving residents with incomes below 80 percent of the median. Much of this work has been accomplished in partnership with both private homebuilders and nonprofit developers and has resulted in exciting and award winning new Seattle neighborhoods that are national models of urban design success.
Young Architect Award A new award, the Young Architect Award will be given to individuals licensed fewer than 10 years who have shown exceptional leadership and made significant contributions to the profession in an early stage of their architectural career. A young architect may be recognized for contributions to design excellence, sustainable design, community engagement, the practice of architecture, technological innovation, or education. The first recipient of the Young Architect Award is David Goldberg AIA, Co-Managing Principal, Mithun. David Goldberg has achieved remarkable success at an early age by following his own values. He is dedicated to improving community and the natural environment, and works to advance sustainable design knowledge, both technically and aesthetically. Recently named Mithun’s Co-Managing Principal, he has been instrumental in developing the firm’s carbon reduction strategy. Goldberg is the firm’s representative to the Chicago Climate Exchange and the Seattle Climate Partnership, Vice President of Earth Share of Washington, and on the Woodland Park Zoo Board of Directors. With a passion for making a difference, he focuses his talents on creating unique sustainable environments for mission-driven clients. Noteworthy projects include IslandWood, Woodland Park Zoo’s Zoomazium, The Seattle Aquarium, Tulalip Tribal Government Administration Building, and the Teton Science School. ************* AIA Seattle recognizes with gratitude the achievements of many who have helped advance the community and the profession, and welcomes all to join in congratulations and in celebration of these honors.
